At the beginning of 2006 I passed my practical driving test (wife) in the UK. However, I found it a bit confusing swapping my provision licence for the full licence. Questions like, do I need to fill in a form, do I need a new photo and can I drive before I get my full licence, went through my mind.Well, here’s the idiot’s guide with instructions on swapping your provisional for you full licence, this is written in Feb 2006 so obviously the information and will change. If your provisional licence was issued after 1.3.2004, the examiner will keep it after you pass your test and it will automatically be sent off. You should receive your full licence shortly and there is no fee to pay.If your provisional licence was issued after 1.3.2004, then you need to send off your provisional licence (both parts), test pass certificate and a £9.00 fee to the DVLA. You do not need to fill in a form, but it is a good idea to put your date of birth and licence number on the back of the cheque. You should receive your full licence within 3 weeks, mine came within a fortnight. You don’t need to get a new photo taken. The photo on your driving licence needs to be updated only every ten years. You are able to drive while waiting for your full licence to come through. It is a good idea to take a note of your licence number though, in case you need it. I found tesco the cheapest car insurance for a car insured in my own name.
