Taking a pram on the London Underground (the tube)

Taking a pram and baby on the tube is not the easiest of tasks, the London Underground is very old so disabled and pram access was never in the mind of the original builders, although some stations do have lifts e.g. Goodge street and Covent Garden, most alas don't.

If you are a tourist in London with kids or simply want to go via the London underground with your baby and pram here are a few tips.

Obviously avoid going in rush hour, basically go after 9.30 am in the Monring and get back before 4pm in the afternon, if possible. On every occasion that my wife or even both of us have taken our son on the underground someone who has always offered us help. A lot of Londoners are worried helping strangers that they will get some kind of blacklash, however Mum and/or Dad with pram and baby is no threat and maybe that is the reason that everytime we have been on the tube someone has offered help without us asking, Londoners can be very kind and generous.

If you can get off at a station with a lift rather than escalators and if you are having problems with the pram, simply ask for some help, this is best done by looking at someone and asking directly with a smile rather than a general plea. At the entrance and exit of the train station there will also be a member of staff to open up the large gate to allow the pram through. And let me repeat the most important thing, don't go on during rushhour, the trains are packed, people are tired and prams take up room.

Hope this helps you and enjoy yourself in London.
