There are hundreds of companies offering people maybe like yourself submission into the site engines, they list thousands upon thousands of directories and search engines they will add you to and it does sounds at first glance great, I mean what do you have to lose, just a few pounds or dollars.The truth of course they are a waste, in fact they can do more harm than good.Let's take the example of the most important website of them all, good old google. If you set up a new website how does it find you? Links, simple really, even a single link on a decent genuine website will do it, and the more genuine links you have the better you will do (yes I know it is a lot more complicated than that but that is beyond this article)I had created new websites set a single link to them from other websites and google has found them in a few days, but be warned in nearly all cases google won't actually think your site is important to appear at the top of its search lists for 9 months (this is called the google sandbox and again is beyond this article, what is important is that adding yourself to worthless directories and search engines won't help, in fact in many cases they are after your email address to send you junk mail, or products they think will be useful to someone setting up a website and who doesn't actually know what they need.A lot of the directories they add you to are really free classified ads, totally useless, and it really doesn't do your reputation any good at all.MSN search, google and yahoo will find you without using these site submission sites/software, so really don't waste your money, spend some time registering with www.dmoz.org it will take time to appear but google likes this directory.Your focus on a new website is decent links and content, and more decent content. Don't get distracted, don't add flashy things to your website that slow it down (huge pictures) or even worse frustrate the user (background music, pop up windows, etc). Focus and be patient, easy to type so much harder.
