Many of us have grown up watching the movie the WIZARD OF OZ; it's a holiday favourite. Ever wondered why the Wicked Witch of the West is green? What made the Lion is so cowardly? And why does the Wicked Witch of the West travels by broom, but Glinda the good witch travels by bubble? All of these questions are answered in the theatre production WICKED. A musical based on the book by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of the witches of Oz. Glinda, the Wicked Witch of the West and her sister the Wicked Witch of the East. The witches in Maguire's story aren't polarised into good and wicked, they are people who are forced by events into these roles. The production opened at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London at the beginning of September 2006. It is a fun production, with lots of laughs and catchy songs. It has a strong cast with the character of Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) played by Idina Menzel, who won a Tony award for playing this role on Broadway. The Apollo theatre with its art deco design creates a great ambience for the show and compliments the sets perfectly. The Wizard's mechanical head and Glinda's bubble are well done. The metal dragon at the top of the stage looks menacing when lit up for the more tense scenes.
WICKED is an enjoyable show. It is good fun for both children and adults and I would recommend going to see it.
